Class 4: Making Art with Nature and Recycling

Class 4 just finished up and whew was it a hot day!!! We stayed outside most of the day, as we figured with art we would be getting messy and it’d be easier to clean up outside! We had many ideas for the day, but we finally picked a few activities to do. Our plans were to make a bird feeder out of a milk jug, as well as paint with vegetables.

As always, we started the day off by going around and talking about art and how we’ve interacted with art in the past. We also talked about recycling and what kinds of things we can recycle. Then we began reading Emeraldilicious by Victoria Kahn. We talked about how she used things she found in the park already to make a chair, or the wand. This book ties recycling and art with nature, because she’s using things she found in nature to make a wand, tiara, and a cape.

After reading this book, we took the kids on a little walk to look at our man-made Sakura and Totem signs. We talked about how Cooper had to cut down the tree and sand it so that the sides were even and smooth enough to paint on. Then he had to treat the wood, so it wouldn’t rot. Then finally he was able to paint our logo and then put the finish on there.

After that, we had homemade popsicles as a snack to prepare them for going outside in the heat of the day.

After the snack, we made ink out of different fruits and vegetables by putting them into the nutribullet. We used Blueberries for blue/purple, Beets for red/purple, Spinach for Green, Mango for yellow, Carrots for orange, and strawberries for red/pink. We allowed the kids to add the fruits/vegetables to the blender cup then I put it on the Nutribullet. I had pre-cut some stamps out of different vegetables like carrots, turnips, and broccoli, and I let them cut a strawberry however they wanted to make their own stamp.

Then we gave them a piece of 11×17 paper and let them loose! They were allowed to use whatever stamps and ink they wanted, and we made sure to rotate the ink around so that all the kids had access to all the colors they wanted.

Then we had lunch. At this point it felt like the kids had been around food and snacks all day, but they ate their lunches up! After lunch, we went around and found 2 rocks to paint. We got the idea from this website. They turned out pretty cute until most of the boys painted them all white. This was mine:

Then we went inside to cool off and read Michael Recycle and Don’t Throw That Away! The boys were getting tired of girly books so I was glad I found Michael Recycle at Half Price Books. Both books talk about recycling and what we can do to make our world more green!

Then we went around the house to pick out some leaves to stamp and to glue onto our bird feeders. This was the last activity of the day, and the most gruesome as the glue was NOT sticking very well onto the bird feeders. I found the ideas on pinterest of course, and the links are here: bird feeders and leaf stamping. Unfortunately we didn’t get a picture of their finished products, but they were cute in their own way!!!!
